Commissioner Bone was first appointed by Mayor Richard Daley to serve on the CHA Board
on July 7, 1999 with her term of office expiring on July 7, 2004. A life-long
resident of the Chicago Housing Authority, Mamie Bone was elected in 1971,
and remains President of the Henry Horner Local Advisory Council.
Commissioner Bone has also served as a member of the CHA Executive Advisory Board and Chairperson of the Central Advisory Council. An activist and former Secretary to the NAACP going back to 1971, Commissioner Bone has been a tireless fighter for the rights of residents and has championed the cause of resident employment, resident empowerment and the provision of safe and secure neighborhoods for all public housing residents. Commissioner Bone was the first Horner resident to grow a vegetable garden and was instrumental in promoting and organizing Horner residents to embark in a similar endeavor. Commissioner Bone has been actively involved in the redevelopment of the Horner Development and surrounding communities. She presently serves on the Board of Directors for Miles Square Health Center and the Westside Future. Ms. Bone has also served on the Board of the James Jordan Boys & Girls Club, Major Adams Academy, Women’s Treatment Center, Westside Consortium, Near West Community Organization and the Salvation Army.
