As plans for the redevelopment of Lathrop move forward, it is important to remember that these plans were crafted with full input from the community, who were part of the decision making process and worked with CHA, the alderman, advocates, longtime affordable housing developers and other stakeholders to make decisions about the shared vision for the future of their community.
BACKGROUND: A group of protestors broke into a secured building on Sunday March 20 and trespassed at Lathrop Homes, endangering themselves and others by entering an unsafe vacant building. When CHA officials asked the group to leave the property and continue with a peaceful protest on the public way, they refused and were arrested without incident by Chicago Police.
CHA has been working hand in hand with the community and the Lathrop working group every step of the way, and remains committed to the replacement of 525 units of housing on the North Side. CHA has asked aldermen and community stakeholders to work collaboratively with them to help the agency identify locations and opportunities for housing.
As stated at a community meeting and a lengthy hearing before the City Council Committee on Housing in February, CHA will use its strategy of building, rehabbing and acquiring housing as it continues its work of creating affordable housing opportunities in neighborhoods across the city.
Since the beginning of this year, CHA has created or acquired more than 125 units of affordable housing with the opening of a mixed-income building in Pilsen and the acquisition of three buildings that will preserve affordable housing in Lakeview and in West Ridge – housing that otherwise would have been sold and turned into market rate housing. In the coming weeks, CHA expects to dedicate two more mixed-income rental buildings that are part of the redeveloped Cabrini Green complex.
