Bridgeport
Homes is located west of Halsted and Lituanica Avenue, between 31st Street
and 32nd Street.
Public housing residents are represented by a strong leadership headed by the development’s Local Advisory Council (LAC). This council is synonymous with a tenant association and is headed by an LAC president who is part of the Central Advisory Council, the governing body of the LAC.
Bridgeport Homes was completed in 1943 and named for the neighborhood that surrounds it. Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood has produced many of the city’s legendary political leaders, including the late Mayor Richard J. Daley and his son, current Mayor, Richard M. Daley. Bridgeport Homes reflects the larger community not just in name, but in architectural style, as well. The 18 two-story row houses resemble building patterns throughout the neighborhoods, making Bridgeport a model for housing the CHA hopes to rebuild under the Plan for Transformation.
A total of 260 people currently reside in the 18 two-story rowhouses at Bridgeport Homes.
Under the Plan for Transformation, beginning in 2003, Bridgeport Homes will be completely rehabbed for public housing residents.
