Resident Leadership Public housing residents are represented by a strong leadership headed by the development’s Local Advisory Council (LAC). This council is synonymous with a tenant association and is headed by an LAC president who is part of the Central Advisory Council, the governing body of the LAC.
The Cabrini-Green Homes is a composite of four smaller developments built over a 20-year period. The site originated with the construction of the Frances Cabrini Rowhouses in 1942. Known at the time as “Little Sicily,” the development served as a stronghold for the city’s Italian-American community. By 1962, when the William-Green Homes were added to this composite public housing community property, Cabrini-Green was one of the largest sites in the CHA inventory, with a mostly African-American residential population. In the intervening years, two other wings were added to this community– Cabrini Extension North and Cabrini Extension South. Today, Cabrini-Green is a high-density combination of high-rise buildings and row houses. At its height, the site was home to about 15,000 residents and 3,500 public housing units. Today approximately 4,700 residents currently reside at this development. Plan for Transformation: Mixed-Income Redevelopment Redevelopment of Cabrini-Green is occurring in several on and off-site phases. Those phases are summarized below: Cabrini Extension North (On-Site) The Cabrini Extension North site is part of the larger Near North Redevelopment Initiative. A total of 718 units will be constructed on this site, including 215 public housing units, 144 affordable units, and 359 market rate units. When completed, this site will include both rental and for-sale units.
North Town Village (Off-Site)
Old Town Square (Off-Site)
Renaissance North (Off-Site) Renaissance North is a mixed-income community containing 59 units. Public housing residents will occupy 18 of these units. The Renaissance Company is the developer for this site which is located on North Avenue.
Orchard Park Townhomes (Off-Site) The CHA purchased 13 units formerly owned by the Chicago Metropolitan Housing Development Corporation in a 54-unit mixed-income town community built on 2.75 acres of CHA land. CHA residents occupy these 13 units. The development is located on North Clybourn not far from the original Cabrini site.
