Rockwell Gardens is located on Chicago’s west Side, three miles from downtown
Chicago. This site is bordered by Western Avenue on the East, Monroe Avenue
on the North, Rockwell Avenue on the West and Van Buren Avenue on the south.
Resident Leadership Public housing residents are represented by a strong leadership headed by the development’s Local Advisory Council (LAC). This council is synonymous with a tenant association and is headed by an LAC president who is part of the Central Advisory Council, the governing body of the LAC.
Built in 1961, Rockwell Gardens was the first development in the nation where both federal and state funds were used to construct new public housing units. A total of 1,126 units were built. Originally designed by Nicol and Nicol, this development is situated on 17 acres of land on Chicago’s west Side three miles from the city's downtown district.
Rockwell Gardens contains 212 occupied units, housing a total of 750 residents.
As reflected in the picture above, the redevelopment of Rockwell Gardens will change this aging property into a vibrant community, where connections to the surrounding city –and its street grid are restored. Construction at this site is scheduled to begin in 2003 and once completed, it will provide a total of 780 replacement housing units. These units include 264 rental units for CHA residents. The breakdown of these units is detailed in the chart below. East Lake Management and Development Corporation is the master developer for this site.
