Resident Leadership

Public housing residents are represented by a strong leadership headed by the development’s Local Advisory Council (LAC). This council is synonymous with a tenant association and is headed by an LAC president who is part of the Central Advisory Council, the governing body of the LAC.

History

The Stateway site was built in 1958. The 33-acre development originally consisted of eight high-rise buildings which accounted for 1,644 public housing units.

Existing Conditions

Approximately 600 residents live in the remaining two high-rises at Stateway. These buildings will eventually undergo demolition. The other six buildings were demolished to make room for a lower density, mixed-income community. This site is surrounded by the Chicago Police Department’s new Central District Headquarters, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and U.S. Cellular Park.

Plan for Transformation: Mixed-Income Redevelopment

The redevelopment plan for Stateway Gardens is divided into four phases and will take up to six years to complete. The master plan for this project calls for diverse housing types that include town houses, three, four, five and six flats, and mid-rise buildings. More than 1,300 units will be built as part of the plan for Stateway redevelopment; 885 units on-site and 430 units off-site.

Off-site construction will begin during the summer of 2003 at Pershing Courts, a rental building that will contain a total of 80 units. These units include 27 public housing replacement units and 53 affordable units. The affordable units will be restricted to households earning 60 percent or less of area median income.
