Washington
Park Homes is located on the near south side of Chicago.
Public housing residents are represented by a strong leadership headed by the development’s Local Advisory Council (LAC). This council is synonymous with a tenant association and is headed by an LAC president who is part of the Central Advisory Council, the governing body of the LAC.
Construction of Washington Park Homes was completed in 1962. When this development was first built it had 67 buildings located on twenty-seven sites throughout Chicago’s south side. Today, seven of the buildings that comprise this site are high-rises, and the remainder are sixty-groups of low-rise buildings with a total of approximately 1,065 units.
Washington Park contains 431 occupied units, with about 700 residents residing at the development.
The Working Group for Washington Park is currently mapping out a strategy to include both the rehabilitation and redevelopment of Washington Park Homes. Approximately 56 units of the CHA’s Washington Park low-rise building portfolio will be rehabilitated into a mixed-income development, including 14 public housing units, 31 affordable units and 11 market rate rental units. Rehabilitation will include modernizing and transforming the interior and exterior aesthetics of the development, security upgrades and accessibility for the disabled as well as site improvements such as new sidewalks, driveways and parking lots.
