Parkside of Old Town is part of the redevelopment plan of the former Cabrini Extension North, which includes approximately 18 acres on the city’s Near North Side. In 1994, CHA was awarded a $50 million HOPE VI Grant to facilitate the redevelopment of the Cabrini Extension North site and two years later, the City of Chicago created the Near North Redevelopment Initiative (“NNRI”) to direct redevelopment activities. Bounded by Halsted Street to the west, North Avenue to the north, Orleans Street to the east, and Chicago Avenue to the south, the redevelopment of Cabrini Extension North calls for the construction of 2,000 to 3,000 new housing units of which 700 would be designated for CHA residents. The plan will also herald a new police station, two new schools, expansion/improvements of existing parks, new public library, a new shopping center, and improvements to infrastructure.

The 700 units for CHA residents would be built on land throughout the Near North area. CHA began acquiring units in 2002 at off-site properties and began the construction of Parkside of Old Town in 2006 on CHA land. Parkside of Old Town will be completed over several phases.

Current Status

Currently under construction, Phase I of Parkside of Old Town is located along Division Street between Larrabee Street and Seward Park. Phase 1A Condo began construction in 2006 and includes:

72 new CHA rental condominium and townhomes.
208 affordable and market-rate condominiums and townhomes.

Parkside of Old Town Phase 1B Rental began construction in 2007 and is also located along Divison, from Larrabee Street to Cambridge Avenue. Phase 1B Rental consists of:

83 new CHA and affordable rental condominiums and townhomes.
28 market rental condominiums
New commercial space on Larrabee and Division

Retail: A new retail shopping center anchored by Dominick’s Finer Foods is located at Clybourn Avenue and Division St.. Parkside of Old Town is also located near several shopping centers on Clybourn and North. The Wells Street retail district of Old Town is a short walk away to the east.

Fire: Fire Station is located at Division and Larrabee

Police: A new 18th District Police Station is located at Larrabee and Division.
