CHA, Park District and partners celebrate opening of Williams Park Fieldhouse at Dearborn Homes

CHICAGO (Oct. 7, 2019) – The Chicago Housing Authority joined the Chicago Park District, 3rd Ward Ald. Pat Dowell and the Public Building Commission Saturday for the ribbon-cutting at Williams Park Fieldhouse at Dearborn Homes.
Located at 2820 S. State St., the approximately 11,200-square-foot fieldhouse features a half-court gymnasium, a 1,600 square-foot multi-purpose room with an operable divider, and spaces for art, education, performances, meetings and exercise. There is built-in bleacher seating, natural light and exposed wood beamed ceilings.
Outdoor improvements include a new 1,560 square-foot with controls integrated into the landscape and containing multiple spray features, bike racks, landscaping, exterior lighting, concrete benches and new sidewalks.
CHA and CPD partnered to fund the construction of the $9.3 million project.
“Nothing is more important than providing CHA residents and the larger community with a modern, recreational space for youth,” said CHA Acting CEO James Bebley. “It is an example of CHA’s commitment to building not just housing – but strong, vibrant communities, throughout this great city.”
Chicago Park District General Superintendent and CEO Michael Kelly said:
“Park fieldhouses are community anchors. These buildings allow access to programming and events that enrich our lives. We are excited to bring this new anchor to the Douglas community. By making these types of investments in our parks and neighborhoods, we’re providing resources for children and families, improving the quality of life in our communities and building a stronger Chicago.”
The new Williams Park Field House is the latest in park improvements in Bronzeville that also includes the Ellis Park Arts and Recreation center.
The previous fieldhouse was demolished in 2018 to make way for this project.
