CHICAGO – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recognized the Chicago Housing Authority, along with FitzGerald Associates Architects and Holsten Real Estate Development Corporation, as one of four national winners of the 2009 National Smart Growth Achievement Awards for transforming an aging, isolated public-housing development into the successfully integrated Parkside of Old Town community.

Mayor Richard M. Daley was joined today by Chicago Housing Authority and other public officials and community members at the official re-opening of the Britton Budd Apartments, a 1917 vintage hotel in Lakeview that has been renovated to provide 173 unites of affordable housing for Chicago senior citizens.

CHICAGO – About 3,000 Chicago Housing Authority Housing Choice Voucher families picked up free, new winter coats provided by the national non-profit organization Operation Warm and JP Morgan Chase at a distribution event Saturday at the UIC Forum.

CHICAGO – Twenty-five talented Chicago Housing Authority high school age students who increased their average reading level by nearly three grades and their average math level by almost two grades were honored at a graduation ceremony Thursday for “Next Step: College Prep” - a summer educational program sponsored by Siemens Technologies, Illinois Institute of Technology and Windows of Opportunity.

CHICAGO – Community leaders and residents joined the Chicago Housing Authority to celebrated the official re-opening of an 18-month, $16 million renovation project at Flannery Senior Apartments.

CHICAGO – Approximately 3,200 former Chicago Housing Authority residents who have not yet satisfied their right of return under the Relocation Rights Contract (RRC) – and who have not responded to CHA’s attempts to locate them – will be provided a final opportunity to respond starting today, when 90-day legal notices appear in the Chicago Sun-Times, El Dia and the Defender newspapers.

In an effort to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents, the Chicago Housing Authority Board of Commissioners will consider a $23 million camera initiative Wednesday that would see approximately 3,000 cameras installed at all of the Authority’s senior and family developments, representing nearly 16,000 apartments.

Having won the support of CHA leaseholders, residents of the surrounding community, and now the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), demolition will promptly begin at six buildings at Harold Ickes Homes – a move that will enhance the safety and security of the community and pave the way for future development.
