CHA’s Board of Commissioners approved two major initiatives that will enhance the quality of life for residents of Altgeld Gardens.
“CHA residents deserve investments that make their communities a better place,” said CHA Interim CEO Angela Hurlock. “This is especially important in historically disinvested areas like Altgeld Gardens. With today’s Board actions, CHA is demonstrating our commitment to improving the lives of Altgeld Gardens residents—especially young people.”
- Improved Access to Beaubien Woods
The Board approved the transfer of about 2,200 square feet of CHA-owned land to the Forest Preserves of Cook County. This land will be used to create a new, fully ADA-accessible forested trail, providing residents easier access to Beaubien Woods. The project aligns with CTA’s Red Line extension and the Chicago Department of Transportation’s safety improvements on 130th Street and Greenwood Avenue. - Support for Youth through By The Hand Club for Kids
CHA also approved the disposition of 1.24 acres at 132nd Street and S. Ellis Avenue to the nonprofit By The Hand Club for Kids. This land—currently a parking lot—will provide access and support future renovations of the historic “Up Top” building. Designed by renowned architects Keck & Keck, the building will be revitalized and potentially expanded to better serve local youth. BTHCK has secured an agreement to purchase the building, contingent on this land transaction.
