The Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) aims to provide stable, decent, safe, and affordable housing to more than 62,000 low-income families and individuals while supporting healthy communities in neighborhoods throughout Chicago. To achieve its mission CHA has varied departments meeting the agency's and its families' needs.

Program Details

The Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) Summer Internship Program is an 8-week program that is designed to provide opportunities for college students (both undergraduate and graduate) to participate in a professional environment, building workplace skills and gaining valuable experience in preparation for future employment.

Program dates: June 17 - August 9, 2024 (Dates subject to change)

Hours: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM (40 hours per week excluding holidays)

Compensation: $15.80 per hour

Qualifications

The CHA is seeking applicants for the Summer Internship Program who meet the following qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled as active students in good standing at an accredited college or university for the academic year 2024-2025.
  • Maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or above as an undergraduate and 2.5 or above if in graduate school.
  • Skilled and proficient in Microsoft Office computer applications: MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Majoring in any of the following or related subject areas:
    • Accounting
    • Architectural Studies
    • Business Administration
    • Computer/ Information Technology
    • Economics / Finance
    • Engineering
    • Political Science
    • Psychology
    • Public Policy
    • Social Work
    • Urban Planning

Application Requirements

Selected candidates must provide the following documentation:

  • Proof of current enrollment and resume
  • A transcript of grades for the most recently completed semester, proof of CHA residency (i.e., Client ID or first and last name of the CHA head of household)

Yes. Currently enrolled students in an undergraduate or graduate program at a college, community college, or university (two-year or four-year institution) are eligible; applicants must have a grade point average of 2.0 for undergraduates and 2.5 for graduate students.

Yes, the CHA Internships are paid experiences at the rate of $15.80 per hour.

Yes. The Summer Internship Program is full-time for 8 working hours per day/40 hour per week. Applicants should expect to work Monday-Friday; 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM – an hour is allocated for lunch.

Interns may be assigned to any CHA departments requesting interns, or to CHA vendor organizations. The Internship program is focused on providing broad exposure to various aspects of the housing authority.
