Community Planning

CHA engages in community-driven planning and design processes. The content and context of these processes may be unique for each community, but united by the aim of capturing community goals, priorities, and visions for their area and translating them into an actionable plan. With each phase, community stakeholder meetings are held with CHA resident leadership groups, other community groups, City of Chicago departments and City agencies. The three phases of community-driven planning can essentially be summarized as listen, suggest, and improve:

Hundreds of property owners and industry professionals representing thousands of rental units throughout Chicago’s 77 community areas attended the 15th annual Chicago Housing Authority Owner Symposium last month at the Hyatt Regency Chicago, while hundreds more watched online via Webex Events.

Mobility Counseling Services Program

Mobility Areas are neighborhoods with low poverty (less than 20%) and low crime rates. Families may choose to move to these areas for better schools, safer streets, and more job opportunities.

The Mobility Counseling Program (MCP) helps families find housing Mobility Areas. A counselor will help you plan your move, find and apply for housing, and build a support network in your new community. Participants can also attend workshops to learn about budgeting, understanding leases, and moving tips.

Earn Your High School Diploma

Looking to complete your high school education? City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) offers free classes to help you earn your diploma. As a CHA resident, you can take advantage of this opportunity to prepare for your GED® Test or HiSET exam and move forward in your educational and career goals.

Jawanza Malone

Jawanza Malone is the Executive Director of the Wieboldt Foundation. He comes from the Kenwood-Oakland Community Organization (KOCO), one of the oldest Black-led grassroots membership-based community-organizing groups in Chicago, where he served as a community organizer, coalition builder, and executive director.

Development Update: 1237 N. California Opens

CHA joined Hispanic Housing Development Corporation and the City of Chicago Wednesday for a groundbreaking of 1237 California, a new, 40 unit, six story Humboldt Park property that will include 18 Project Based Vouchers.
