The U.S. Housing and Urban Development department awarded the Chicago Housing Authority’s proposal for 48 Project-Based Vouchers totaling $417,000 to enable homeless veterans and their families to access affordable housing and supportive services at the 65th Infantry Regiment Veterans Housing development in the West Town Community on Chicago’s west side. It is the new construction of a 4 story elevator building containing 48 one, two and three bedroom units. The project, with its affordable rent structure and vast array of services, will be a significant addition to housing options for homeless veterans.

The proposed project represents a partnership which includes Hispanic Housing Development Corporation (HHDC), the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, the Norwegian American Hospital (NAH) and the Chicago Housing Authority. NAH is adjacent to the development site and will provide on-site supportive services in coordination with the HHDC and the Jesse Brown VAMC utilizing the Housing First approach. The project will provide a clean, safe and secure living environment for veterans and their families seeking to end the cycle of homelessness.

By establishing and maintaining project based housing, this project will help veterans to participate in treatment, increase employability, and improve psychosocial functioning. The project will also meet the needs of veterans returning from active combat duty who will need low income housing to re-establish their lives.
